5 Live Shows Rocking Nashville This Weekend

-

After the micro-winter that put a damper on last weekend, we’re ready to come out of our caves and live it up. There’s a little something going on for everyone this weekend and we think these 5 shows particularly ROCK.

White Reaper

The Basement East

Fri, May 12, 8:00 pm

YOU’LL LOVE IT IF…

You have a favorite denim jacket, like fist pumping and singalong choruses…

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT

What’s greater than The World’s Greatest American Band? More than just the title of their new album, that can-do spirit permeates every bit of this drastically-different sophomore album. Sure, the new sounds means that fans of White Reaper’s first effort might want to give the record a spin before diving in head-first, but we personally are always psyched to see a band breaking new ground.

PRE-SHOW TIP

We’re big fans of pizza (who isn’t), so naturally we’re bigger fans of big pizza. Meet up with some pals to tackle a few colossal slices of NY-style and a couple beers at Five Points, and get appropriately hyped for the night’s high-energy main attraction.

Scale Model EP Release

Little Harpeth Brewery

Fri, May 12, 9:00 pm

scale model 1.png

YOU’LL LOVE IT IF…

You’re a local scene connoisseur; not afraid to cut a rug.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT

Release shows are always a special occasion, but Scale Model is pulling out all the stops to make this one like a scene from Blade Runner if all the Replicants were created to dance. Sleeptalkre and Pet Envy will be opening up the show, and if those Little Harpeth brews aren’t enough to get you in your dancing boots then we don’t know what to tell you.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

Why not hit a few other breweries on the way out to Little Harpeth and have your own little pre-show brewery crawl? We’re partial to Bearded Iris and Jackalope and with so many options around town nowadays you can’t go wrong.

Fruit Bats and Michael Nau (of Cotton Jones)

The Basement

Sat, May 13, 7:00 pm

FRUIT BATS 1.jpg

YOU’LL LOVE IT IF…

You’re on a first-name basis with the vendors at your local farmers’ market.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT

Fruit Bats will be bringing their low-and-easy folk tunes along with a strong undercard in the form of Cotton Jones mastermind Michael Nau. Both groups specialize in music that’s listenable and familiar but doesn’t sacrifice a bit of depth in its execution. If swaying a bit and enjoying the atmosphere is closer to your speed, this is the show to see this weekend.

MAKE A DAY OF IT:

Drop by the Nashville Public Library earlier in the afternoon for a tutorial on container gardening, the practice of sowing some wild oats while reclaiming eyesores in your yard, and ease on into the show relaxed and ready.

Real Estate

Exit/In

Sat, May 13,  9:00 pm

REAL ESTATE 1.jpg

YOU’LL LOVE IT IF….

You have a penchant for PBRs and vibey guitars.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT

Real Estate has essentially become the poster-band of the laid back psych resurgence, and their new album In Mind is about as concerned with shaking things up as the band seems to be with, well, pretty much anything. Turn on and tune in for a night of easy riders and good times.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

Continue the time-honored tradition of stopping in at The Gold Rush and meeting some friends over beer that goes down as easy as the show you’ll be checking out.

Spend The Night With Alice Cooper

Tennessee Performing Arts Center

Sun, May 14, 8:00 pm

alice cooper 1

YOU’LL LOVE IT IF…

You can recite “The Raven” by heart, have your Vincent Price impression down pat.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT

Sure, Cooper may be in his twilight years, but that just means the witching hour is closer than ever. His over-the-top theatrics have only been refined over the years, meaning it’d be a mistake to think of this as some kind “legacy” event–if you’re gonna hang out with the original supervillain of shock rock, you better be ready to bring it.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

It just so happens that the Belcourt is running a week-long retrospective covering the films of fellow master of the macabre David Lynch, and what better way to get psyched for a real spooky time than one of his mood-setting classics?
