When it comes to beer, Nashville’s cup runneth over.

Our lovely city has its fair share of breweries, and even though we may not be able to drink as much as the brave soul pictured above (HOW is he alive after that?), we enjoy a plethora of local brews. There are fantastic breweries popping up every day, and the beer culture has become a celebrated staple of community, bringing together music, food, and people from all walks of life in the name of a stellar brew. Tonight is no exception! You could be enjoying Black Abbey’s Belgian beer under 20 foot cathedral ceilings at The Farm House, with culinary selections from the incomparable Chef Cioccias. The private dinner is a true Nashville experience, and we can’t wait to participate in the tradition of gathering over a delicious meal! To celebrate the event, we thought we’d give you the lowdown with 3 things you should know about Black Abbey Brewing Company:

It’s inspired by a very famous religious figure and a beer-making nun.

Black Abbey takes their inspiration from Martin Luther, who joined a monastery after experiencing a particularly scary thunderstorm that made him promise God/St. Anne that he would become a monk if he made it through (if Luther had the calming Twitter feed of @NashSevereWX in the midst of the storm, the world might have been pretty different). Making good on his promise, Luther joined a monastery and eventually wrote the Ninety Five Theses, ushering in the Protestant Reformation and changing the landscape of faith forever. So what’s the beer connection? Well, Luther found himself a super cool beer-makin’ refugee nun named Katherine who he ended up marrying. After moving into their new place Katherine started brewing her own Belgian-type beer, and it was far and away the town favorite (East Nashville hipsters with home breweries, take note). These two lived with conviction and passion, finding the beauty and community in the purity of a quality beer. Just like Black Abbey!

It’s taproom has cathedral vibes.

This is not your typical stare-at-aTV-screen hustle-and-bustle brewery. You’ll feel the reverence and peace of the monastery with the cathedral-inspired decor and low wooden community tables (brought to you by local artist Nate Akey of Five String Furniture). There isn’t a flashy distraction in sight – just you, a Belgian brew, and some solid conversation with your taproom pals. The atmosphere is also a nice break from the super hip minimalist design of the moment that isn’t specific to one place – this taproom follows the brewery theme through and through. We love it!

They have a Monty Python-themed beer.

The Brother Maynard is a nod to everyone’s favorite clerical character in Monty Python, and the description of the beer is worth the price alone:  “From the caves of Caerbannog to the frozen lands of Nador there is much rejoicing! Brother Maynard comes to blow thy enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy. Five hops and five (three, sir!) three malts taunt your palate until you run away. Pairs well with lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large… Skip a bit, brother….6.1% ABV.”  We’re sold.
